And there’s the rest of the cast, which includes Kim Fischer, Susannah Flood, Ryan Foust, Harrison Fox, Maren Heary, Brad Heberlee and Casey Hilton. “He is a master at what he does,” says Mathis of Greif. “She is adorably responsible and tries to hold everything together in a situation in which things simply start to unravel.” Make Believe is directed by Michael Greif, ( Rent, Next To Normal, Dear Evan Hansen), and manages to be hilarious and terrifying, sometimes all at once. “She has a sense of what’s right and wrong and the way things should be done,” says Mathis. To borrow from the words of the David Bowie song "Changes," these children “are quite aware of what they’re going through.”Īs the oldest sister, Kate, Mathis is a protector of sorts. They are trying to make their way in a less-than-idyllic and very messy family. The siblings are doing their best to understand and cope with the circumstances they have been unwittingly thrust into. All the action takes place in the attic of their childhood home. Without giving too much away (it’s best to be surprised when you see it), the play centers around the Conlee siblings at different stages of their lives. Mathis is currently starring in Bess Wohl’s dazzling and evocative play Make Believe which just premiered at Second Stage Theater. Most recently on television Mathis played Sara Hammon in the Showtime series Billions. Since making her feature film debut in Pump Up the Volume, her credits have included American Psycho, Little Woman, The American President, The Punisher, Under The Dome, Law & Order, Grey’s Anatomy, 33 Variations and Nomad Motel. Mathis has played many eclectic roles in film, TV and theater. My mother gave me a lot of good lessons.” “Nothing gets done without everyone's contribution. “She showed me how each person is bringing something to the production and to have respect for the work everyone puts into it,” says Mathis.
